Jet lag is one of those things that you can’t really understand until you’ve gone through it. Going through jet lag as an adult is one thing, but seeing a kid experience it is really tough. - Talk to your kids about jet lag- If your kids will be traveling a long distance, it only makes sense to talk to them about what they will be experiencing. Tell them what jet lag is and why the body goes this route. They will appreciate the head’s up!
- Help your child get lots of rest- One thing about jet lag is your child is going to feel tired. No matter how much they sleep, it will take them a while to “catch” up. Try not to get upset if your child is sleeping a lot, it’s just a way of their bodies coping.
- Drink lots of water- You may already know this, but drinking lots of water is another way you can help your child combat jet lag. Your body needs lots of fluids to help overcome how weak and tired it feels. The last thing you want is for your child to feel dehydrated. Encourage them to drink every chance they get.
- Help your child pick out comfortable clothes- Your child is probably going to be uncomfortable enough. They don’t need the help of restricting clothes to feel worse. Take the time to make sure your child is dressed comfortable. Plus, when they are comfortable, they’ll sleep better, and in return bounce back a little quicker.
- Spend time out in the sun- Once you reach your destination, encourage your child to sit outside in the sun a little bit. The extra vitamin D will help their bodies heal tremendously. Sit outside with your child, so they can understand the benefit of getting a little extra sunshine when their bodies are completely exhausted.
- Schedule recovery time- One of the worse things you can do for your child is to schedule something right after they get back from a trip. They will be exhausted. Give your child time to rest. Give it a few days before you schedule any other big events. This will help them combat jet lag.
