Sometimes we need a little self-control when it comes to spending our money, however, it is hard to maintain self-control if you don’t set up boundaries for yourself. If you are like me, you can blow money like it’s going out of style when you travel. There are so many gas stations, shops, and activities along the way, but everything adds up. Before you realize it, you blew through more money than you wanted to. Here are some tried and true Tips for Not Blowing Your Money While Traveling!
Tips for Not Blowing Your Money While Traveling
Don’t Bring All your Cards
Credit and debit cards are so easy to just swipe. They are harder to keep track of how much you are spending and how much you have left. Instead of swiping for everything, leave most of your cards at home. Only take 1 card for emergency situations! You never know what can happen, so it’s best to be prepared, however, leaving most cards at home makes you more aware of your money.
Make a Budget and Stick to It
Most people don’t make a budget when they go on vacation. This can really cause a financial strain when you get back. Instead of heading out to the beach without a care in the world, set a budget for your entire trip.
Use the Envelope System
Once you have set a budget for your entire trip, set a budget for individual expenses while you travel. Determine how much it will cost for gas along the way. Put only that amount in an envelope. Do the same with other expenses such as food, activities, and mementos.
Use Cash Not Cards
Obviously, if you aren’t going to bring all your cards, you are going to need to bring something. I would suggest bringing cash with you for your expenses. Cash is easier to visually see how much you have spent and what you have left. You can also use travelers checks if you are worried about losing your cash.
Purchase Excursions Before you Leave
Once you get somewhere, the amount you will pay to do an activity or excursion is going to be double the price you could find online or through discount sites. Decide ahead of time what you want to do and research your best options. Setting up an itinerary for each day you are traveling can help you save money.
Rent Hotel Rooms off Discount Sites
Never pay full price for a hotel room! Seriously if you wait until the day of, you can pay anywhere from $100-300 per night! Discount sites like Booking Buddy, Hotwire, and Priceline can offer you far better deals on hotel rooms with better ratings. Do your research and book hotels before you leave. The more you have planned and budgeted, the less money you will blow while traveling.
When we traveled to New York, we budgeted the most we could afford on the trip. We came back with $120 (our speeding ticket was $100 of that). You never know what might come up so it is always good to bring little emergency funds.
